Bring NTEU to Your Workplace
The number of employees in the Office of the Secretary of the Department of Interior has exploded over the past several months. This is due to a “consolidation” within the agency that has been publicly touted as a way to “streamline operations” and reduce costs.
Currently, all employees under the auspices of the DOI Office of the Secretary are included in presidential Executive Order 14251, signed March 27, 2025: Exclusions From Federal Labor-Management Relations Programs. That means DOI Office of the Secretary employees are ineligible for traditional union representation under the labor statute – at least for now. NTEU continues to fight in the courts and Congress to undo the damage created from this EO.
So, why are DOI employees organizing a union? While NTEU cannot be your exclusive representative for negotiating a collective bargaining agreement (CBA) right now, you still have the right to form and join a union.
The first NTEU members didn’t have collective bargaining rights OR civil service protections back in 1938. But through solidarity and persistence, they fought for (and won!) many workplace improvements that became the foundation of their first contract and many protections we fight to maintain today. NTEU members, like you, continue to organize to expand federal employees’ rights, setting standards in their workplaces, in the courts and on Capitol Hill.
Unions are powerful and effective! That’s why the current administration is working so hard to dismantle our union and keep thousands of federal employees from exercising their rights to form and join a union. But it can’t dismantle our solidarity and our strength!
Even though you are currently ineligible to negotiate a collective bargaining agreement, we continue to fight to ensure that NTEU can eventually become your exclusive representative and that you have the right to a collective bargaining agreement. In the meantime, there are still many reasons to belong to NTEU. The most important thing is that standing together, federal employees have more power than going it alone. You will be part of an organization that focuses exclusively on the needs of federal employees. We spend every hour and every dollar working on your behalf.
And, NTEU can represent you in any situation where DOI has failed to meet its obligations regarding its own policies, as well as EEO cases, RIFs, etc. We can do that through filing grievances, going to arbitration, or suing on your behalf in court. We would be an advocate for you on Capitol Hill and provide you with the most updated information regarding happenings in Washington, DC.
