Federal Trade Commission Employees Vote to Unionize

Press Release September 26, 2024

WASHINGTON – Employees at the Federal Trade Commission in Washington and around the country will be represented by the National Treasury Employees Union following the results of an election announced this week.

The employees voted 415-25 for NTEU to be their exclusive representative, according to election results collected by the Federal Labor Relations Authority.

“This is a historic day for frontline employees at the FTC, who have chosen to stand together in solidarity and have a greater voice in their workplace,” said NTEU National President Doreen Greenwald. “We congratulate them on joining colleagues across government who are empowered through their union to bring positive change to the agencies and advocate for the tools and resources they need to serve the taxpayers.”

The new NTEU Chapter 344 will represent about 820 FTC employees in Washington D.C. and eight regional offices in New York, Cleveland, Chicago, Atlanta, Dallas, Los Angeles, San Francisco and Seattle.

Employees first contacted NTEU about organizing back in 2023, raising concerns about their access to telework, potential politicization of the civil service and a desire to make their agency a place to build a career while doing meaningful work for their fellow citizens.

“This thoughtful and energetic employee-driven organizing effort is a testament to the growing labor movement in this country, and NTEU is honored to assist the committed civil servants of the FTC as they exercise their collective bargaining rights,” Greenwald said.

“My dedicated colleagues at the FTC are eager to have a seat at the table when it comes to negotiating important workplace policies,” said Emily Blackburn, who helped lead the organizing effort. “We recognize that we are stronger together and will use the power of our new union to support each other as we strive to carry out the vital mission of our agency promoting competition and protecting consumers.”

With the addition of FTC employees, NTEU now represents employees in 36 different agencies and offices.
