WASHINGTON – With tax filing season starting today, IRS professionals are on standby to help taxpayers with all their tax needs—from complicated filing questions impacting small business owners to standard inquiries about refund timelines.
“Despite the challenges of the last year, IRS employees continue to show up every day to serve the public, working long hours to guarantee excellent customer service and a smooth filing season for millions of Americans,” said NTEU National President Doreen Greenwald.
In FY24 alone, the IRS reported the agency processed nearly 270 million tax returns, collected more than $5 trillion in gross taxes, and issued nearly $5 billion in refunds. With the IRS facing more than $1 billion in cuts from a potential bipartisan agreement before the January 30 deadline, the agency may have to rely heavily on several billion dollars left over after a separate funding bill would rescind more than $11 billion from the Inflation Reduction Act's $18.6 billion special allocation.
Though the IRS may be relatively well funded this fiscal year, IRS employees will have to navigate several challenges, including the massive loss of 25 percent of the workforce, leadership changes, and implementing major changes in the law.
This has not deterred these civil servants, and they continue to show up daily for taxpayers. The more than 360 Tax Assistance Centers across the nation are invaluable resources to low- and moderate-income families and enhanced customer support functions like expanded call back features, e-processing, and tools to check refund timelines are going a long way to optimize the taxpayer experience.
“None of these services could be provided without the tireless work of IRS employees, who continue to do their jobs with pride, courtesy, and commitment,” Greenwald concluded. Their work is vital to ensuring taxpayers have the easiest experience possible and allow the IRS workforce to deliver exceptional service without exception.”
