The Customs and Border Protection Office of Field Operations has a helpful list of six things shoppers can do to reduce the chances of being scammed into purchasing fake products, including clothes, consumer electronics and toys: Avoid deals that seem too good to be true; research the product; avoid suspicious websites; use cybersecurity protection on your devices; inspect packages upon arrival for anything unusual; and spread awareness with friends and family.
In fiscal year 2025, CBP seized nearly 79 million counterfeit items with a combined value of over $7.3 billion, if they were genuine.
