NTEU Called for Immediate Back Pay for IRS Employees—and WON!

This morning, the IRS informed employees that they won’t receive their back pay until Nov. 24 or as late as Dec. 8. At the same time, the administration yesterday provided a Nov. 19 time frame for when most federal workers will receive their first paycheck in more than a month.

This is entirely unacceptable, and we immediately jumped into action, calling an emergency virtual press conference with a number of news outlets—from the New York Times to the Wall Street Journal—demanding the IRS, Treasury Department and the administration fix this mistake and keep their promise to IRS employees and process their back pay by Nov. 19. Our message was clear: The law requires that federal employees receive back pay, and IRS employees cannot wait much longer to receive what they are owed.

Within an hour of our virtual press conference, thanks to the dogged questions by media outlets in attendance, the IRS reversed course and reinstated the original Nov. 19 deadline!

Thank you for your unwavering dedication to your work and to the taxpayers you serve. Your stories, your advocacy, and your commitment to the American people helped fuel this victory and our demands that IRS and the Treasury Department fulfill its back pay obligations promptly.
