A House-passed bill to fund the federal government for seven weeks failed in the Senate on Friday, as lawmakers grow closer to the Sept. 30 end of the current fiscal year.
Congress was scheduled to return from this week’s recess on Monday, Sept. 29, giving them two days to pass a stopgap funding measure and avert a government shutdown.
However, Republican leaders on Friday canceled scheduled votes for Sept. 29 and 30, to force the Senate to agree to their continuing resolution proposal without further negotiations.
