Additional $4.5 Billion Approved in Student Loan Forgiveness

More than 60,000 public service employees with student loans will have their debts forgiven, totaling about $4.5 billion in relief, the Biden-Harris administration announced today.

This latest round of relief through the Public Service Loan Forgiveness Program (PSLF) brings the total to $74 billion for more than one million borrowers.

The relief is credited to fixes that the administration made to the PSLF program at the urging of NTEU and its members who were previously denied relief they believed they were getting. Prior to these fixes, only about 7,000 borrowers had ever received forgiveness. NTEU continues to call for permanent reforms to the PSLF and new student loan repayment programs as a recruitment and retention tool for agencies.
