Happy Labor Day! Union Support Highest in Decades

Support for labor unions is at a 57-year high, according to a new Gallup poll.

The poll reveals that 71 percent of Americans support labor unions, with six percent identifying as part of a union and 16 percent having a union member in their household.

Gallup has been tracking Americans’ perceptions on labor unions since the 1930s.

The growing support for unions comes as employees from companies ranging from airlines to retail and tech are increasingly unionizing.

“We’re seeing a resurgence of worker organizations and unionization,” President Biden said earlier this month. “Where I come from, that’s a good thing, and it’s long overdue.”

The Biden administration is taking steps to encourage worker organizing and collective bargaining in the federal government. Earlier this year, OPM issued guidance to agencies that implements some recommendations of the Task Force on Worker Organizing and Empowerment, which calls on agencies to pursue a more collaborative relationship with federal employee unions.
