Don’t Delay! Apply for a Temporary PSLF Waiver

Don’t wait until the last minute to apply for the temporary Public Service Loan Forgiveness (PSLF) waiver. Give yourself time to prepare your PSLF form and/or to apply for consolidation, and for your forms to be processed before the Oct. 31 deadline.

Under the limited PSLF waiver, you can get credit for past payments that were not made on time, were not the full amount due, or were not on a the right repayment plan.

Here’s what you can do to take advantage of the limited PSLF waiver:

To get started, log in to your StudentAid.gov account to use the PSLF Help Tool. Make sure you have your most recent W-2 or your agency’s Federal Employer Identification Number.

Along with certifying your employer, the PSLF Help Tool can help you determine the qualifications for PSLF and generate the forms you’ll need to apply.

The limited PSLF waiver requires you to have a Direct Loan or to consolidate your loan into a Direct Loan by Oct. 31. An overview of the status of your loan(s) and loan type(s) is available by visiting StudentAid.gov and checking your “Aid Summary.”

The consolidation loan applications and instructions are available here. (Five things you need to know about consolidating your loans).

Detailed information about the waiver is available here.
