Still No Deal to Avoid Government Shutdown

Government funding expires at midnight Friday and Congress has yet to introduce a new continuing resolution that is necessary to avoid a shutdown.

A group of Senate Republicans that objects to the government’s vaccination policies for private sector employers is threatening to delay any new CR in protest. A second CR is necessary to temporarily extend government funding and provide Congress more time to negotiate a longer-term spending agreement for the rest of the 2022 fiscal year.

The House was expecting to vote today on a new continuing resolution, but that has been delayed and a new schedule has not been announced. If there is not enough time to pass a new CR through both houses before midnight Friday night, a shutdown could begin Saturday morning.

NTEU is urging Congress to resolve the standoff, which would ensure that government services are uninterrupted and relieve the anxiety of federal employees who fear their paychecks could be delayed.
