Continuing Resolution Blocked in the Senate

With government funding set to expire on Thursday night, the Senate failed to advance the House-passed continuing resolution that would fund agencies through Dec. 3 and suspend the debt limit.

The CR passed the House last week, but the measure failed in the Senate largely along party lines. Senate Republicans object to the provision in the CR that would suspend the debt limit through December of 2022.

There are now just days left before the end of the fiscal year and NTEU is urging Congress to take action to prevent a government shutdown on Friday and ensure that our country can continue to pay previous debts. The bill was set to allow additional funding to agencies to prevent furloughs and provide funding for CBP to replace user fee shortfalls due to the pandemic.

Last week, the Office of Management and Budget (OMB) alerted agencies of the possibility of a government shutdown in case government funding runs out on Thursday night. While it is routine for OMB to meet with agencies about government shutdown planning seven days before a lapse in appropriations, it is unacceptable to be contemplating yet another government shutdown, especially during a global pandemic.

NTEU is closely following congressional action and will provide regular updates.
