Ortiz’s desire to join the military stemmed from his lifelong goal
of becoming a paratrooper.
Soon after enlisting in 1987, Ortiz joined the U.S. Army’s
82nd Airborne Division out of Fort Bragg, N.C., and excelled at paratrooping.
He enjoyed it so much that before being discharged in 1993, he had
become a certified jumpmaster.
Upon being discharged from active duty, Ortiz served a short stint
in the U.S. Army Active Guard before going to work for the U.S. Customs
Service, now U.S. Customs and Border Protection.
Now a Command Sergeant Major in the California National Guard—1st Battalion, 160th Infantry Regiment—Ortiz is the senior
enlisted adviser to the Battalion Commander, responsible for the health,
morale and well-being of 680 fellow soldiers.
In almost a dozen years as a CBP Officer, including 11 as an NTEU
member, Ortiz said he has never once regretted his decision to join
CBP. “The best part of being a CBP Officer is being part of
200 years of history while serving as the guardians of our nation’s
borders,” he said. “The bottom line is I want to continue
to serve my country.”
