In Memoriam
Following in the footsteps of his father and grandfather,
both former military men in the Philippines, Private First Class
Paulo Marko Pacificador, 24, saw joining the U.S. Army as a way
to gain respect and make his family proud.
Pacificador’s life ended on Aug. 13 when his vehicle was struck by
a roadside bomb while on patrol in Qayyarah, Iraq. Pacificador, of Shirley,
N.Y., was one of three soldiers killed in the attack.
His family remembered a gifted young man who was fascinated by cars and
had hopes of one day becoming an Army officer. "His life was full of
ambition," said his father, NTEU member Jose Pacificador (NTEU Chapter
99, IRS Brookhaven Campus), a former soldier in the Philippines Air Force.
"He wanted to be somebody to someone.”
Born in Buguey, Cagayan, in the Philippines, Paulo Pacificador immigrated
to the United States with his family in 1988, living in Virginia before
moving to Jamaica, N.Y., and then to Shirley, N.Y., on Long Island. Before
joining the Army, Pacificador attended Suffolk Community College, where
he studied computer engineering.
A member of the 5th Battalion, 82nd Field Artillery Regiment, 4th Brigade
Combat Team, 1st Cavalry Division, Pacificador left for basic training in
Oklahoma in January of 2006 and was sent to Iraq less than a year later,
on Oct. 30.

Army Capt. Travis Patriquin was
killed in Ramadi, Iraq, on Dec. 6, along with Marines Major Megan McClung
and Army Specialist Vince Polmente. The 32-year-old captain created a widely
circulated PowerPoint titled "How to Win in al-Anbar," which
used stick figures and simple language to identify and offer solutions to
problems in Iraq. Travis, fluent in Arabic and several other languages,
was committed to improving communication between U.S. soldiers and the Iraqi
people. He fought in special missions in Afghanistan and Iraq.
Captain Patriquin was the son of Connie A. Patriquin of NTEU Chapter 10
(IRS Chicago).
